The U-cordon is one of the simplest trained fruit tree forms to look after, yet it makes a dramatic and productive addition to the garden.
U-cordons look attractive when planted in a row, but are also very effective as a single tree trained against a wall. They work best when allowed to get quite tall - 2m-3m is ideal.
The U-cordon form is most suited to apples and pears. It is not really possible to use this form for stone-fruits.
U-cordons are surprisingly productive, once fruiting begins. Because the fruit is well-exposed to the sun, fruit quality and flavour can be better than from conventional bush-trained fruit trees.
U-cordon specification
U-cordons are generally trained on semi-dwarf rootstocks.
We recommend a clear stem of about 30cm before the branches start. The 2 arms should be about 60cm apart (i.e. 30cm each side of the stem).
For a consistent effect when planting several trees, plant at 1.2m intervals. This will give a 60cm gap between the adjoining arms of each tree, which is the same distance as between the arms. For a more spacious (and still pleasing effect) try 1.8m apart.
The arms will require supporting with tall bamboo canes, and should eventually achieve a mature height of 2m or more.
We do not supply pre-trained U-cordons but can supply 1-year maiden trees which are suitable for this form.
