The palmette is a trained form rather like an espalier, except the arms are raised at an angle of about 40-45 degrees instead of being horizontal.
The palmette has a pleasing formal appearance when trained against a wall. The effect is even more dramatic when several trees are planted together, because the arms can be allowed to cross - in which case you get an effect similar to a multi-tier Belgian fence.
Our starter espaliers are grafted on semi-vigorous rootstocks, and can be trained-on as palmettes. This will give a mature spread of about 3m and mature height of 2m or more in good conditions.
All varieties are suitable for training on a trellis, which will get light from both sides. You can use any orientation, but traditionally the trellis would be aligned north-south.
If training against a wall or fence it is important to choose the correct variety for your planting situation. All varieties are suitable for a south-facing aspect, but a west-facing or east-facing aspect will only suit some varieties, and a north-facing aspect is only advisable for certain varieties - ask us if you are not sure.
